The theme of this year is “Tsutaya Jūzaburō, Friends, and Rivals.” The focus of the twelfth edition of the summer school focusses on one of the key publisher in early modern Japan: Tsutaya Jūzaburō. By reading a wealth of materials written in vernacular Japanese (wabun) and sōrōbun, we will learn about Tsutaya’s business acumen and creativity. Along the way we will familiarize ourselves with Tsutaya’s network: authors and artists that collaborated with him, and rival publishers. We will also read primary sources that reveal Tsutaya’s struggles with the authorities. Overall this year programme will offer insights on the publishing industry in early modern Japan.
This year we will not be able to offer kanbun kundoku.
Please make sure to arrive on Sunday 3 August 2025.
Classes start on Monday 4 August 2025, 9am BST and end on Friday 15 August 2025, 4pm BST.
